Cherry Blossoms of Nuglar

The Cherry Blossoms of Nuglar, Switzerland

Christine and I take long walks in Nuglar when the cherry blossoms first appear in the Spring. Nuglar is a very small village in Baselland, a Canton of Switzerland. It is known for its natural beauty and most of all for its cherry trees. Most of the fruit winds up as Kirschwasser, a powerful schnaps that is produced in the village.

Signs of San Francisco

Signs of San Francisco

I've always had a fascination with signs especially if they are quirky and clever. Like most people, wherever I've traveled, I take pictures of the city that I'm visiting, however I inevitably take more pictures of signs than typical landmarks. I think signs tell you a lot about the character of a city and it's people, and that is no more true than in San Francisco. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

While visiting Cantabria we also took a day to visit Bilbao. The architecture is quite special and of course we had to take pictures of the famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. There is some beautiful music on this slideshow so turn on your speakers.

Basel Fasnacht

Basel Fasnacht

The start of the carnival season in Switzerland begins in the traditionally Catholic regions. The most famous of these is in the city of Lucerne. It begins on "Dirty Thursday" and continues until Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. As a Protestant Canton, Basel's carnival known as Fasnacht breaks with this tradition by beginning on the Monday following Ash Wednesday.

Basel Fasnacht begins with Morgestraich. By 3.30 on Monday morning the hundreds of Cliques made up of Fife players and drummers assemble with their lanterns in various parts of the old city. At precisely 04.00 hrs all the lights in are turned off and the Cliques begin marching all at the same time. There is no official marching route, cliques weave in and out of the small alleys and streets and continue well into the day. Fasnacht lasts for exactly 72 hours and thereby ends on Thursday morning at 4am.
