John Holston
Abt 1791 - 1850 (~ 58 years)-
Name John Holston [1, 2] Born Abt 1791 Virginia, USA [3, 4, 5, 6, 7] Gender Male Died Between 1849 and 1850 - The last record showing John Holston is when he appears as a minister marrying a couple in St. Joseph County, South Bend, Indiana on 19 Dec 1849. He does not appear with his wife in the census of 1850 where she can be found living with their son James. Some researchers claim that he is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery next ot his wife, but no record or marker has been found to substantiate this claim. He is also not found in the 1860 census whereas Nancy is, living still with her son James. It is doubtful that they were divorced and if not then John died shortly before the 1850 census.

Notes - According to Bert's letter, John Holston was a Baptist preacher who traveled from town to town on horse back doing evangelical work. He was of Scotch parentage.
It appears that Bert was correct in one respect, that John Holston was a Baptist minister. The following affidavit confirms this:
28 September 1832 Affidavit of character by John Holston, Baptist clergyman and Matthew Rogers, laborer, both of Edgar County, Illinois [both signed]. Source: Rev War pension applications for WOOD, ABRAHAM, NC, #S32611
In addition, in 19 Dec 1849 the marriage records, St. Joseph County, South Bend, Indiana show John Holston, Minister presiding over a wedding. So there can be little doubt that he was a minister and most likely Baptist as Bert claimed.
1830 Census Edgar County, Illinois
All search query attempts to find John Holston and his family in the 1830 census of Edgar County were unsuccessful no matter what name variants were tried. A page by page review finally revealed a John Holeston on page 25.(this name variant was never attempted before). There are 6 males under 20 years old and 2 females under 10. The ninth child was obviously Virginia who was married 14 Sep 1829 and therefore living with her husband, Joseph Jewell.
Nancy is listed as 40 and under 50 which would suggest she was born between 1781 - 1790. However, John is shown in the 30 and under 40 age bracket. This suggests a year of birth between 1791 and 1800. I do not believe this to be a recording error because in the 1840 census of Edgar County, John is shown as 40 and under 50 while Nancy is 50 and under 60. Given these facts, the estimated year of birth I have been using for John of 1788 is not correct. The earliest year of birth would be 1791.
1840 Census Edgar County, Illinois
1 male 10 & under 15 (Waller), 1 male 15 & under 20 (Abram), 2 males 20 & under 30 (James & John) living with John and Nancy. 1 female 10 & under 15 (Sarah) and 1 female 15 & under 20 (Nancey). What doesn’t quite work is where are Hardin and William? Hardin didn’t marry until 1841 and William until 1843 so they should have been at home. Perhaps they were working on other farms and living with those families. As mentioned above, John is shown as 40 and under 50 while Nancy is 50 and under 60.
- There is a record of a John Holston serving in the War of 1812 in the 2nd Regiment (Baylys'), Virginia Militia.
- According to Bert's letter, John Holston was a Baptist preacher who traveled from town to town on horse back doing evangelical work. He was of Scotch parentage.
