In the 1850 census of LaRue County, KY Nancy Bayley is listed in a household of Holstons which obviously are relatives of Nancy but it is unclear about their relationships. Listed are:

It appears that Thomas is the head of the household since he is listed first, but the two children are listed last. It is a puzzle so far who James W. Holston is. Thomas and Nancy are found in the 1860 census of New Albany, Floyd, Indiana (just across the river from Louisville). This is the same Thomas and Nancy found in 1850 because of the gap in their ages (Thomas is 4 years younger) and his occupation is the same - cabinet maker. However, the children's names are different. James is 16 but was not in the 1850 census and Sammie (a female) is 13 and was not in the 1850 census either. However, if we assume that the census taker made a mistake and that the James W. Holston was in fact their son then he would have been age 5. This age fits with the 1860 census. Sammie is probably a nickname and she is really Mary, but the ages don't work out exactly.

"Thomas Bailey enlisted in Louisa County in the Spring of 1778 for twelve or eighteen months. Her brother John Gentry was drafted for twelve months at the same time Bailey enlisted. After her brother John Gentry and Warren Cash had returned from the war she met Cash at the house of Edmund Stringer who was her uncle. Cash took hold of her and said "Look at John Gentry's thumb." meaning that her thumb and that of her brother were very much alike. Warren Cash and her brother served in the same company and Cash now lives in Hardin County and draws a pension. Cash was a Baptist preacher."
