      Civil War Records

There are records for two James M Frieley in the Civil War on the Confederate side. It appears that he was commissioned and assigned first to Branner's 4th Battalion of the Tennessee Calvary. After that unit was merged into Ashby's 2nd he organized a company of men at Pikeville on September 10, 1862. He and his company joined Murray's 22nd Battalion of the Tennessee Cavalry in January 1863. On detached service by order to General Bragg A & I G. O. S. 4th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (Branner's)
4th Cavalry Battalion [also called 1st or 2nd Battalion] was organized in August, 1861, with six companies. Its members were from the counties of Knox, Hamilton, Monroe, Union, Claiborne, Hawkins, Bledsoe, and Jefferson. In September the unit contained 490 effectives and confronted the Federals in Kentucky. During May, 1862, it merged into the 2nd (Ashby's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin M. Branner and Major John M. Bridgman were in command.

      22nd Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (Murray's)
22nd Infantry Battalion was organized in January, 1863, with nine companies. The men were from the counties of White, Bledsoe, Warren, Van Buren, Putnam, and Smith. It joined the Army of Tennessee after the Battle of Murfreesboro and was placed in General M.J. Wright's Brigade. However, that summer the unit merged into the 38th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Major Thomas B. Murray was in command.

      On detached service by order fo General Bragg A & I G. O. S. O. 290/10 Dec 7, 1864; USA Gen'l Hosp April 1, 1861; Inflammation of tonsils

      22ND (MURRAY'S) TENNESSEE INFANTRY BATTALION
Also called 2nd Tennessee Infantry Battalion

Organized January, 1863; field consolidation with 38th Tennessee Infantry Regiment; paroled Greensboro, North Carolina, May 1, 1865, as part of 3rd Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment.

This battalion was formed by the addition of five companies which had been organized in September and October, 1862 to four companies which had previously served in the 4th (John P. Murray's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which was disbanded in January, 1863. T. B. Murray was formerly lieutenant colonel of the 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and was frequently referred to as lieutenant colonel of the 22nd Infantry Battalion. However, his official rank seems to have been major of the 22nd Infantry Battalion.

It was eventually consolitdated into the 38th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The last report from any company of the battalion was dated September 26, 1864 at Palmetto, Georgia, and stated "The battalion has been in all engagements from Rocky Face, Georgia, to Jonesboro, Georgia, August 31, 1864."
