51 (Research):Her social security number listed in the California Death Index is actually that of her husband Ralph Howe. Holston, Mildred Geraldine (I89)

52 (Research):In addition to Jonathan and Susannah's graves in the Goodfield Methodist Church Cemetery in Decatur, there are the following graves:

John H., 1858 - 8/26/1884, 26 yrs 2 dys, [s/o J. & S.] [ m.12/29/1881];
Sallie A. [Elder], 11/9/1862 - 3/19/1930, w/o J.H." p. 63

John H. (Isom) is probably a son of Jonathan and Susannah [s/o J. & S.] and Sallie A. Elder was his wife.

According to a biography (#271) in the History of Meigs County and Its People 1836 - 1997 Jonathan and Susanna had one son John H. Isham (1858 - 1884). His wife was Sallie (Isham) Isom. The spelling of the last name was changed Isom after the death of her husband. Note: This may be a family story because his father, Jonathan was listed in land sale document as Jonathan Isom.

As of Feb 2007 there is a family by the name of Isom still living in Meigs County:

Ronnie & Linda Isom
352 Howard Rd
Decatur, TN 37322
(423) 334-5171

Call to see if they have any additional information about the Isoms or Stanleys.

Found the following record in the 1870 Meigs Co. census:

78 ISOM Noah 20 M W Farmer
Amanda 20 F W
Wm H 4/12 M W

Could be a descendant.

Also the following entry in the 1850 Census

350 Judy ISAM 65 F " VA
Jonathan 23 M " TN
Angelina S 14 F " TN
Charles S 10 M " TN

Could this be the Jonathan Isom that married Susannah? The age is about right.

53 (Research):In the 1870 Census of Meigs Co. there is a Jane Martin who is 81 years old living with the head of the household, James Martin, a farmer, who is 44 years old. Martin, Jane (I736)

54 (Research):In the 1915 SF City Directory, there is listed a Lindskog, Louise (wid Henry M.) r. 324 Clipper St. - This undoubtedly indicates she is the widow of Henry M. Lindskog since women were listed by their married name.

We also know from Otto's, Hermione's, and Roy's death certificates that their mother's maiden name was Janson, so it follows that their mother was also Janson. Also, Janson is both a Norwegian (there are more Norwegian "Jansens" than "Jansons") and Swedish name and that fits with her marrying a Swedish Lindskog.

Record of Death for Louise Janson Lindskog

Name: Lindskog, Louise
Age: 73
County: 21 (Marin)
Died: 5 Feb 1935
Recorded: 1935
Ref number: 10305

She probably died in the home of Otto, Hermione, or Roy in Marin County.

In 1915 we see her in the home in San Francisco living with Allen L. and Otto M. at 324 Clipper St. Maybe she moved to Marin after Allen L. got married or when Otto moved to Marin. If she still lived with Allen L. she probably moved to one of the other children's homes after Allen L. died in 1929. The other dates involved also work - if she was 73 at the time of her death, she would have been born in 1862 and married in 1882 at the age of 20 or 21, and her first born, Otto, we know was born in 1885.

We know from the 1930 census as well as other sources that Louise stated she was born in New York and also from these sources that she was born about 1860. However, in 1920 she is shown in the 1920 San Francisco census living with Otto and his family and her birthplace is listed as Massachusetts. Did Otto tell the census taker this fact or did Louise? If Otto did then perhaps he was mistaken. She is shown as 52 years old as of her last birthdate. The census was taken in 06 January 1920 which would put her birth year at 1868. Unfortunately this is inconsistent with the Louise Janson record shown below. However, at the time of her death she was 73 which would put her birth year about 1861-1862. This appears to be the more accurate of the two birth years.

The following is the 1870 Federal Census of San Francisco, Ward 11, taken on 29 August, 1870 where she appears as the daughter of Charles and Thereese (Theresa?) Janson. There are no other Louise Jansons in California at this time, the census further shows her parents as born in Sweden, she in New York, and her age in 1870 of 10 years old. This is undoubtedly the correct family because too many facts correlate with what we know about Louise. The census also shows that the father, Charles Janson was a naturalized U.S. citizen. Apparently, he was quite a successful man because in this census he valued his real estate at $600,000 and his personal estate at $400,000, very substantial sums in 1870.

Notes:

There is tax receipt that was made out to John Stanley on 3 Nov 1881, so he was still alive as of this date. And, his last child, Susan, was born in Jan 1883, so he was alive at least 9 months before she was born. However, there is a pension claim receipt made out to Mary E. Stanley, widow of John Stanley on Nov 25, 1889, so he was obviously dead by this date. The Special Schedule of the 1890 census also shows Mary Stanley as wife of John Stanley.

In the 1880 Census, he gives his age as 52 which would be correct if he were born in 1828.
In the 1870 Census, he gives his age as 31 when he should be 42.
In the 1860 Census, he gives his age as 29 when he should be 32
In the 1850 Census of Rhea Co., a John L. Stanley, age 20 is listed in the household of a white female, Nancy Stanly, age 50 (could be a 6), with a white male, Alkana (Elkanah), age 29, and a white female, Lucinda, age 22.
Stanley, John L. (I304)

57 (Research):It is believed that he died young, however no evidence has ever been found about his death date or place. Bert said that he was deceased when he wrote his letter of 7 Jan 1900. Holston, Chauncey (I65)

58 (Research):Joe Bottomlee in a lookup found a birth record for a Ruth Stanley born 23 Jan 1910; father Jno (John) Stanley who was born in Rhea Co. TN and was a farmer; Mother: Mary Stanley, also born in Rhea Co. TN; Doctor: Dr. Thomison. I'm sure these are my grandparents and my mother, Hazel Rebecca Stanley was born in 1910. But her birthday is 18 Dec 1910, not 23 Jan 1910. I wonder if Ruth Stanley was a child who died as an infant and then 11 months later, Hazel was born.

62 (Research):Little else has been found about Beryl's life. The CDI showing her name indicates that she was married, but her husband with the surname of Legras has not been found. The 1931 obit of John Grant gives her married name as Mrs. F. P. Willett of Atchinson, KS so apparently she was married more than once.

1891 birth Trenton, Nebraska
1900 age 8 Trenton, Nebraska
1910 age 18 Trenton, Nebraska
1920 age 28 unknown, married?
1947 age 55 Riverside, California

Searching California deaths with the surname of Legras (with exact spelling) and birth dates that are close to Beryl's of 1891 we find the following two records:

Alfred Joseph Legras, d. 13 Mar 1978, Fresno, b. 2 Mar 1886, Indiana
Wallace F. Legras, d. 7 Jan 1979, Orange County, b. 22 Jul 1888, unknown

But, neither one had a wife by the name of Beryl.

There is an interesting record of a Beryl S. Howard, married in the 1930 census of Guide Rock, Webster, Nebraska which is about 2 1/2 hours east of Trenton. The birth year is off by 3 years, father's birth state is Kentucky and mother's is Missouri. We know that Beryl's mother was born in Missouri, but her father, Grant was born in Iowa. However, her grandfather was born in Kentucky. Could she have forgotten where her father was born? It is not likely that this is Beryl.

06 Oct 2003 - Found at VitalSearch a record which appears to be Allen L. Lindskog. Information as follows:

Name: Lindskog, Allen L.
Wife's Initial(s): R.
Age at death: 37
County of death: 21 (Marin)
Date of death: 22 Jan 1929
Date death certificate filed: 1929
File number: 3602

06 Oct 2003 - Found at VitalSearch a record in the 1915 San Francisco City Directory. Information as follows:

Lindskog, Allen clk (clerk) r. (residence) 324 Clipper St., San Francisco. Note: this is in the Mission Delores district at the base of Twin Peaks. There are also 2 other Lindskogs living at this address:

Lindskog, Louise (wid Henry M.) r. (residence) 324 Clipper St. - This indicates she is the widow of Henry M. Lindskog.

Lindskog, Otto M. foreman r. (residence) 324 Clipper St., San Francisco

Since we know that Allen's brother was definitely named Otto M. (from death records) we can safely assume that Otto was living with his brother at this address in 1915. It also appears that Louise Lindskog who is a widow was probably the mother of both. Robert Lindskog was not born until 1917 so it is likely that Allen was not married yet to Rosalie Leonetti - it is the likely reason she does not show up at this address. We also know from Otto's birth certificate that his mother's maiden name was Janson, so we can safely assume that her full name was Louise (Janson) Lindskog. If this is true, then Allen Ludwig Lindskog's father was Henry M. Lindskog.

07 Oct 2003 - Found H.M. Lindskog, stationery, 846 Valencia St., res 844 Valencia in the 1895 San Francisco Directory. This is in all probability Henry M. Lindskog who was mentioned in the 1915 City Directory as the husband of Louise Lindskog. It seems that he owned a stationery store and lived next door or above the shop. This address is also only about 10 blocks from 324 Clipper St. where Allen, Otto, and their mother were living in 1915.

07 Oct 2003 - Found the following records:

From the "The San Francisco Call" (a newspaper) database (1869 to 1895)

Lindskog, A.O.... died in 1889 ... age 77 ...1889D-3150
Lindskog, dau of Henry M.... born in 1887 ...1887B-1064
Lindskog, son of Henry M.... born in 1885 ...1885B-1286
Lindskog, son of Henry M.... born in 1888 ...1888B-1152
Lindskog, son of Henry M.... born in 1892 ...1892B-1426
Lindskoy, Henry... married in 1882 to Janson, Louise ...1882M-2640

Note: It is likely that the transcriber made a typing error in the last record. It is very likely that instead of "Lindskoy", it should be "Lindskog". Every other detail checks out. This series of records now gives us proof that Henry M. is the father of Alen Ludvik and his brothers and sisters. It also establishes the missing birth year of Allen L. as 1892 which coincides with the earlier death notice saying he was 37 at the time of his death in 1929. Therefore, Bob (Robert A.) was only 12 years old when he died. These records also give us the marriage year of Henry and Louise and also confirms her name as Janson. Now, is the person in the first record, A.O. Lindskog related in any way?

Question: Could A. O. be Allen Otto and could this person be a relative, perhaps the father of Henry M. Lindskog (Allen Ludvik's father)? One of Allen Ludvik's brothers is named Otto.

07 Oct 2003: Another record was found in the Foreign-Born Voters of California database of 1872:

Lindskog, Andrew......53 in 1866......born in Sweden......33083

Question: Is this the same A.O. Lindskog as in the previous record? It is likely since this Andrew Lindskog was 53 in 1866 and A.O. LIndskog died in 1889 at age 77. Subtracting the two dates gives us 23 years which when added to age 53 equals age 76 (or 77) or the age at which A.O. Lindskog died. So it is very likely that these two records are the same person. It is also likely that he changed his first name when he came to America. In Swedish, Andrew is Anders. So we will have to search in Sweden for a Anders Lindskog born around 1812 or 1813.

19 Oct 2003 - A recent lookup by a genealogy researcher in Marin found no obituary announcement in the Independent Journal for Allen L. or for Otto M.

09 November 2003 - Jennifer states "I managed to get the certificates of Hermione and Roy, but unfortunately was not able to get Allen's certificate. It was listed in the book as entry E-191 but the certificate had been pulled. The clerk said that this happens in case of a murder, so when I mentioned it was a possible suicide, he said it was a strong possibility it was pulled because of this."

Note: obtained Allan Lindskog's death certificate 14 April 2008.

LDS Listings

1. Jonathan Stanley b. 12 Jan 1799 Of, , Hanover, Virginia (no submitter name)
2. Jonathan Stanley b. 1806 Franklin County, Virginia, Parents: William F. Stanley and Lydia Smith, Marriage to Nancy Martin 22 Dec 1819 Franklin County, Virginia (submitted by Mark Stanley 1729 S. Corning Street, Los Angeles, CA 90035-4301)
3. Jonathan Stanley b. abt 1800 Vicco,,Wise, Virginia Parents: Michael Stanley and Mary Gurley (no submitter name)

Jonathan Stanley is listed in the 1830 Census of Rhea County, Tennessee. Page 369 shows:

1 male child under 5 years old, 1 male child between 5 and 10, 1 male child between 20 and 30, 2 female children under 5 years old, and 1 female between 15 and twenty.

Notes on 1830 Rhea County Census:

If John L. was born in 1828 then he would have been the 1 male child under 5 years old in this census and Elkanah would have been the male child between 5 and 10. No mention of a female over 20 which one would expect to see if his wife were alive at the time of the census. It is possible that the census taker ticked the wrong box.

Notes on 1840 Meigs County Census:

This census lists a Nancy Stanly (same spelling as in 1850) as a head of household, no other information so far. Nancy and Jonathan's land was definitely in Meigs County after the division of Meigs from Rhea in 1836, so this is probably my Nancy. If so, it means that since Nancy was the head of the household, Jonathan was dead as of this date. This census also shows David Johns (the probable father of Nancy A. Johns), [end of census page 7], living close to Nancy Stanly, [beginning of census page 8]. John L. whose first wife was Nancy A. Johns probably knew her as they were growing up.

Notes on 1880 Census:

In the 1880 census, Jonathan's son, John L. Stanley states that his parents were born in Virginia. Nancy also states in the 1850 census that her birthplace was Virginia. The land grant issued to Jonathan in 1825 in the Hiwassee District of Rhea clearly places him in Tennessee at this time.

Information on this family from an interview with Peter Alley. Sent to the author by Darrell Stanley, email: darre72007@accnorwalk.com. William b. ca 1777 is called "Buck" on the Franklin Co., VA tax records from 1795 - 1825. From 1826 - 1832, Buck shows as "William Jr. or Buck". After 1832, he is shown as "William Jr. "

1819 - Franklin Co., Va. - Jonathan is on the tax list along with Buck [William IV] who is paying 3 polls, Richard, William, Robert's son, Luke, Thomas, William Jr.[III] and Larkin and John Stanley. [Source: Virginia tax lists 1804-1821, microfilm reel #121, Virginia State Library, researched by Marsha Stanley] (My Note: Buck is paying 3 polls, Jonathan paid just one poll. All 16 year males were taxable in Virginia.)

1820 - Franklin Co., Va. - Jonathan is on the tax list along with Buck [William IV] who pays 2 polls, Richard, William, Robert's son, Luke, Thomas, William Jr.[III] paying 2 polls, Larkin & John and George Stanley. [Source: Virginia tax lists 1804-1821, microfilm reel #121, Virginia State Library, researched by Marsha Stanley] (Clarification by Judy: There is not a William Robert Stanley. It may be that this William is simply Robert's son. There are so many Williams in this family that it is very hard to keep them all straight and with the right father.)

1820- Franklin Co., Va. - Jonathan is on the census showing 1 male age 26-45, 1 female age 16-26. [Source: Franklin County Virginia Census, page 163 (Location: North Carolina Room)]

1821 - Franklin Co., Va. - Jonathan is on the tax list along with Buck [William IV], Thomas, William, Robert's son, William Jr.[III], Larkin & John, Richard, Luke and Joseph. [Source: Virginia tax lists 1804-1821, microfilm reel #121, Virginia State Library, researched by Marsha Stanley] (Note from Judy: Jonathan is not on any Franklin Co., Va. tax lists after this year. )

My Note: In the1820 census of Franklin Co., Va. William [III] is shown as William Sr. His son is shown as William Jr. (William IV). On this census he shows 2 males age 16-26, 1 male age 26-45, one male 45+ (William Sr.[III]), 1 female age 16-26, and one female age 45+(wife). On either side of him is Thomas Stanley, Luke Stanley who married Jane Stanley, William IV's daughter. Also in Franklin County on this census are William Jr. or William IV, Joseph, Jonathan and Larkin Stanley.

Note: Franklin Co., Va. was created from Bedford and Henry Counties on 1 January 1786.

My Note: Although Jonathan is likely a member of this family it has not been confirmed. After 1821, Jonathan no longer appears on the poll tax lists in Franklin Co., VA. It is interesting to note that Richard (brother of Jonathan) does not appear in the 1822, 1823, or 1824 tax lists and then reappears in 1825. Did he leave with Jonathan and then return.?

My Note: According to Harold M. Howser, Route 5, Box 174, Pikeville, Tennessee 37367-9044, the Martins (John Martin) and the Howsers arrived in Tennessee around 1822 having first gone to Kentucky. The 1820 federal census of Tennessee doesn't help us confirm this because the Rhea County portion of the census has been lost.

Notes on Early Roane County Records

- A search of court records from the period of 1805 - 1821 finds no Stanley surname (or variations of thereof).
- No Stanleys found in the TVA Watts Bar Resevoir Cemeteries book.
- Search of Roane Co. Trial Docket Books from 1802 - 1830 did not yield any Stanley surname entries.
- Colonel Jonathan Meigs "Day Book No. 2" reveals no Stanley surname
- The 1830 Census of Roane Co. does not show any Stanleys living there.

Received on 26 January 2006 from John Stanley (my cousin) of Knoxville, TN

He has in his possession a fragment of an old document which reads:

" ..... the 27th 1860 Franklin co. Va ..... nephew, I recid, yours of the 2nd of the .....in due time informing me of the death ..... Richard and others & was glad ..... to hear from some of you were no more...... informed abouth the death of father, he ..... about 19 months ago, he was helpless ..... previous to his death. He spent all..... his money prior to his death ..... off small parcels of that until ...... to a very few acres, taking the ...... has deeded from the orginal ...... he says about 35 acres. This is ...... of the old man when he died and ...... leaving this to us"

(......) indicating sections of the document that are unreadable.

We can make the following assumptions from this document:

1. It is a followup letter from an uncle to a nephew
2. the nephew had previously sent the uncle a letter on the 2nd (possibly the same month)
3. It can't be addressed to Jonathan because he was dead by this date. So, it could have been sent to John L. and was from one of Jonathan's brothers in Franklin Co., VA
4. the "father" he is referring to died "about 19 months ago". If Jonathan is related to this VA family, then his father is likely William "Buck" Stanley (IV) who died 21 May 1859 in Franklin Co., VA. So if this is true then the letter might have been written in December 1860.
5. one name "Richard" is mentioned. If it is the same family, Jonathan had a brother named Richard.
6. "he was helpless...previous to his death" - sounds like the son (uncle) is describing his father, maybe he had a stroke, not unlikely, since Buck Stanley was 82 when he died.
7. and, it sounds like old Buck was doing something strange with his land just before he died and he didn't leave much to his heirs.

Additional notes/assumptions regarding the above document (added 29 Jan 2007):

1. Correction: The letter could have also been sent by an aunt.
2. The letter fragment was in the old saddle bag left by John L. Stanley, so it is likely that the letter was indeed addressed to him and he put it in the saddle bag for safe keeping.
3. If John L. did send a letter to this aunt/uncle on the 2nd, it appears he was informing them of the death of a person, but whom? We know from the 1840 census that Nancy was the head of the household so Jonathan was dead by this date. Nancy was still alive in 1854 (law suit about Father's will), but she does not appear on the 1860 census. Could she be the subject of John L.'s letter to this aunt or uncle?
4. Buck Stanley's will was written on 20 Mar 1848 and was probated 21 May 1859 so it is likely that he indeed did die in May 1859 or about 19 months before this letter was received by John L.
5. Richard is mentioned specifically by this aunt/uncle. Richard along with Jonathan last appears on the Franklin Co., VA tax list in 1821. Could Richard have left with Jonathan when they moved to Kentucky and then on to Tennessee? Then Richard reappears on the Franklin Co., VA tax list (with his father, Buck) in 1825. Richard appears for the first time on the tax lists in 1818, one year before Jonathan, so he could have been Jonathan's older brother and decided to leave in 1822 when Jonathan, Nancy, her father (and family), and the Howsers all left Virginia.

"Thomas Ogden, born in England, in 1770, married Sarah Breeze in Shennandoah Co. VA in 1816. Had land there, sold it to Wm.(?) Rinker, bought land in Harrison Co. Ohio from John Marsh and moved there with his family of Robert, Breeze, Joshua and Elizabeth Jane. He died in Ohio and is buried in West Chester Cem in Tuscarawas Co. Ohio.b. England."

Notes from Alice Rudo aorudo@earthlink.net

Thomas may have come to America with his brothers. Because of the difference in their ages (Sarah b. 1792) it suggests he had an earlier marriage. All children were born in Virginia. Breeze W. went to Iowa as did Robert and Joshua and Elizabeth after 1850. Thomas died in Ohio in June 1852.

Thomas Ogden was born in England and was born in 1770 (abt). I know this from the US Census (1850 and earlier) He died in Ohio in 1852 where he had bought land (I have a copy of the papers) in Harrison Co. Ohio. He had married Sarah (daughter of Harriet) in Shenandoah Co. VA Dec 4 1816. Because of the difference in their ages (Sarah b. 1792) it suggests he had an earlier marriage. With Sarah he had Robert Breeze, Breeze (called Bruce in Thomas's Will) William, Joshua, Washington ( who died as a young man) and Elizabeth Jane. I am descended from Breeze - Alice

There is a reference to a Luke Breeze and a Thomas Ogden in the Ogden Family Newsletter Vol. 1. Land records of Shennandoah Co. VA - it indicates a purchase of 250 acres on Hog (Hogue) Creek by a Thomas Ogden. The deed was dated 21 Jan. 1817 with a Luke Breeze being trustee. I have located Hogue Creek on a Frederick County General Highway map prepared by the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.

David Stielow gave me a copy of an indenture which is cited in Shennandoah County, Virginia: Deed Books W and X, 1815-1817: " Book X, p. 446-17 May 1817. Between James M. Marshall of County of Frederick [to] Luke Breeze of County of Shennadoah... consideration of eight hundred and twelve dollars & fifty cents... a certain lot of ground containing one hundred & twenty five acres being part of the Gooney run Manor & which said lot of ground was lotted by Thomas Lord Faifax to said Luke Breeze...corner to John Blackwood... Another source states "Thomas Bailey enlisted in Louisa Co in the Spring of 1778.... He was a member of Gen. Washington's Life Guard.

Note; The Life Guard was an elite troop of Virginia soldiers guarding General Washington at his stone-built headquarters. It was assumed that Virginia colonists would be most loyal to the general, himself a Virginian. These fighters formed the life guard; they were the first disciplined in an American manual of arms and trained for the rejuvenated attack force.

The children of Thomas Bailey and Nancy Gentry are listed in several places as this being their order of birth, however, it does not appear to be right.

DAR ID No. 43525 states that he served in the Fourth Virginia regiment as private under Capt. Thomas Ridley.

St. Peter's Parish Register
Only three of Nicholas' children are documented as his, specifically in the baptismal record found in the Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. A daughter, Elizabeth, was baptized 29 Aug 1689, a son Nicholas was baptized 30 May 1697, and a daughter "Mabell" was baptized 13 Dec 1702. (There is some confusion concerning the baptismal date of Elizabeth, since in "The Gentry Family in America" (GFA, p.32), the year is given as 1687. (This is a typographical error, as both the transcription of the Register by C. G. Chamberlayne, and an earlier transcription by the Colonial Dames of America give the year as 1689.) As to the rest of Nicholas' children, we must use deductive reasoning based almost exclusively on evidence found in the Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish (successor parish to St. Peter's).

74 (Research):Research Notes prior to finding Henry's birthplace and date:

1. Allan's death certificate - Henry was born in Sweden and Louise was born in New York - this is not consistent with the birthplace of Louise on Otto's death certificate which stated she was born in Berkely, CA. (I now know that she was born in N.Y)
2. Henry and Louise were married in 1882 in San Francisco (archives of the San Francisco Call newspaper)
3. Assuming the death certificate is correct, then Henry immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden before 1882.
4. No Lindskogs (or name variants) found in the 1870 or1880 California census. No Lindskog (or name variants) found in the entire U.S. in 1870 and only 12 found in the U.S. 1880 census.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Roy Victor Lindskog's death certificate, his name was listed as Henry M., but on Otto's and Hermione's, it was Maurice. The conclusion is that his name was Henry Maurice. Henry in Swedish is "Henrik" and Mauritz is Maurice in Swedish. Roy and Hermione's baptism records confirm his middle name as Maurice.

1895 City Directory

Henry M. Lindskog

is listed in the 1895 City Directory as owning a stationery store at 846 Valencia St.

is listed in the 1899 SF City Directory on page 1064 as "Lindskog, Henry M.", a musician living at 4070 26th Street, San Francisco.

Note: 846 Valencia St. is only about 10 blocks from his address in 1899. Also the address, 4070 26th St. is only a block and a half from 324 Clipper St. where his two sons and his wife were living in 1915.

1880 Federal Census

No Lindskog found in the 1880 Federal Census for California. In the entire U.S. only 12 Lindskogs show up. 5 from Nebraska (looks like all same family), 4 from Illinois (looks like one family, mother, father a son, and a daughter), 2 from Colorado (same family), and 1 from Pennsylvania (a machinist). Interestingly, we know that Andrew Lindskog (the possible father of Henry) was alive in 1880 yet he doesn't show up in the 1880 census in San Francisco. One explanation is that he could have been single and may not have been home at the time the census taker was in his apartment building. Obviously, if he was single then he could not be the father of Henry Lindskog.

1870 Federal Census

Neither Henry or Andrew are listed in this census. For that matter, there are no Lindskogs listed in California at all.

Herman Lindskog

From the 1903 SF City Directory, page 1124, there is a listing: Lindskog, Herman, a janitor at the First Swedish Baptist Church. There is a Herman E. Lindskog shown in the California Death Index who died on 31 Dec 1922 in San Francisco and whose wife's initial was "R". This is probably the same person as shown in the 1903 SF City Directory. No connection to Henry Lindskog has been found.

Swedish Baptist Church in California - Notes

When Rev. Gustaf Liljeroth arrived in San Francisco on June 13,1884, and that night held the first service of Swedish Baptists in the home of Rina Olson, he started a church and, ultimately, two BGC districts. Three years later John Alexis Edgren, founder of the Swedish Baptist Theological Seminary (now Bethel) in Chicago, accepted God's call to plant an immigrant church in Los Angeles. These two churches helped start six others in the next five years. In June 1899 the seven churches formed the Swedish Baptist Conference of California. In 1939 the conference dropped "Swedish"from its name. Of 20 churches organized by 1946, only 11 remained.

I have found a William Breeze on a web site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/ which states that he was a farmer in Ballycromwell & Toye in 1886. Ref.: Post Office Directory
There is also another William Breeze listed on the same site: d. 1896 aged 75 ; son of Hamilton & Bessie; husband of Ellen; father of Thomas; Presbyterian graveyard. Ref.: Old Families of Downpatrick & District, pages 102 - 103, R.S.J. Clarke, 1993, Ulster Historical Foundation

76 (Research):Rose Leonetti's birthdate has not been confirmed. There are several documents with conflicting dates. I have used the birthdate from the passenger list when Allan and Rosalie returned from Honolulu on 21 Sep 1919. From Ken Parks

Here is what appears to be Edna Sexton and her family in the 1900 Rhea Co. census:

Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Civil District 15, Rhea, Tennessee; Roll: T623 1593; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 86.

James P Sexton 42 Jun 1857 m4 All below b. TN both parents b.TN
Ellen Sexton 36 Dec 1863 m4 2-2
America D Sexton 18 Mar 1882
Henry C Sexton 16 Aug 1883
Robert Sexton 11 Jul 1888
Edna Sexton 11 Jan 1889
Oscar L Sexton 3 Nov 1896
Patrick Sexton 1 Jul 1898

Edna seems extremely young to have married in Sep 1900 but these things did happen. Note, however, that Ellen Sexton could not be the mother of Edna. Ellen was only been married to James P. Sexton for 4 years, and only the two youngest children are hers.

For starters: Looks like the Boyles book may have had a typo. There is an IGI record of marriage of Edna Sexton to John Standley Sep 21, 1900. -no further info there.

There is also a Edna J. Sexton, father Blagburn Sexton, m. to Emanuel M. Sexton Dec 24, 1901, in Scott County, TN then to Rodelie Phillips, Jan 5, 1908, Scott County, TN.

78 (Research):She is shown as 22 years old in the 1850 Census which suggests a birth year of 1828 but it is unlikely that she was born that year since John L. was born in June 1828, unless they were twins. More likely, she was born in 1827. Stanley, Lucinda (I680)

79 (Research):Some sources indicate that Maryette and Josiah had other children than Ned. Some suggest that Grace Ruth Davis was born on 24 Dec 1873 in Monticello, Jones, Iowa, others do not have this child born to them. 82 (Research):Taken from a letter between William Floyd Ayers and sister Peggy Ann Ayers Rollins:

Ok, we know that Joseph Emory and Rebecca Coggburn were married 4 Dec. 1839, in Monroe County TN. So far though, I have not been able to find anything else about them, until Rebecca shows up in the 1860 McMinn County census, with her 4 children.

Rebecca Emery 39 (our Great Great Grandmother)
Solomon 17
Thomas 14
Mary Jane 10
Margaret (Rebecca) 4 (our Great grandmother)

I would like to be able to find out what became of Solomon and Thomas, as I haven't found anything else, so far. Maybe they fought in the Civil War, or went
west, or died.

In 1870, Rebecca Emory was in Sulpher Springs, Rhea County, TN, in the house with George and Polly Boals (Boles), and when I went back to the 1860 census, I was able to know for sure, that George and Polly were the parents of John Boles, who married Aunt Mary Jane (Emory).

83 (Research):The 1900 Federal Census of Hitchcock County, Nebraska shows that he was born in Kentucky, his father in Maryland, and his mother in Virginia. 84 (Research):The 1900 U.S. Census is the only possible census to give us clues about her. She emigrated from Germany in 1883, so the 1880 census was too early, the 1890 census was destroyed, and she died in 1906 before the 1910 census. The 1900 census lists her as "Mary M.", emigrated in 1883, and 17 years in the U.S. The vital records index of San Francisco list her as "Marie" Leonetti, died 28 April 1906.

The only immigration record found to date that fits the two dates is for a Margarette Winkler, arriving New York on 16 June 1883, born about 1859 who was from Prussia and departed from the port of Bremen, Germany. It appears she was traveling alone. However, if Patti is correct that she was born in Baden-Württemberg then it may not be her immigration record. Baden-Württemberg was a kingdom from 1806 - 1918 and was a separate state from Prussia.

Her mother's maiden name is listed as Entwhistle. But it also shows "her" as a male. This is obviously incorrect. We know from Bert's letter that she was born in Storey Co., Nevada and if she was married in 1893 she would have been 20 at the time which also fits. Smiley, Nellie Izdla (I77)

88 (Research):The LDS birth records of 1850-1855 in Castelsilano, Crotone, Calabria, Italy suggest that Saverio may have been married to Maria Theresa Bolusino before being married to Maria Theresa Rotundo. However, the original microfilm must be viewed before any conclusions can be drawn.

Unlike his 3 siblings, no microfilmed birth record has yet been found for Saverio in Castelsilano.
Leonetti, Saverio (I1032)

89 (Research):The obituary of Emerson states that he was married to Deletti (sic) Groat on 27 October 1875. This has been verified. However it goes on to say that his wife preceded him in death 11 June 1936 which has also been verified. We find that by 1910 Emerson is living with his adopted son, John in Pennington, South Dakota without his wife, Delette. This is also the same situation in the 1920 census when John was 20 and Emerson 67.

John marries Laurel Berby on 1 September 1921 in Pennington, S.D. A marriage record was found for Emerson Holston, age 73, dated 30 July 1924 in Pennington where his residence is listed as Meade County, S.D. and his wife, Delette Tompkins, age 63 was residing in Riceville, Howard, Iowa. The interesting part of this marriage record is that he states he is a "Widower". However, we previously saw that the obituary of Emerson and the death record of Delette Groat Holston listed her death in 1936. This Delete Tompkins was shown on the marriage record as "Divorced".

Is it possible that Emerson married two women by the same unusual given name? Could Emerson have been divorced from Delette and then remarried her after she divorced her second husband? If so, why did he state that he was a widower and not divorced? However, in the 1920 U.S. Census he stated that he was divorced. If she is Emerson's first wife, why the 5 year descrepancy in her age? There was one significant error in the obituary. It stated that Emerson's parents were Waller and Nancy Holston. Waller was married to Anna Mead and Nancy Holston was Emerson's grandmother. Were other facts possibly wrong as well?

My tentative conclusion at this stage is that Emerson and Delette did in fact divorce sometime between 1900 and 1910 when he was seen in the census living alone with his son John. We know that Delette a man by the name of Norris Tompkins on 2 Nov 1910 in Owatonna, Steele, Minnesota. So did she divorce him and eventually remarriy Emerson in 1924 when they were quite old and both alone? The descrepancy in Delette's age in 1924 I chalk up to vanity; she didn't want to admit that she was really almost 70. One last strange event is in the 1930 Census of Crow Wing County, Minnesota. Emerson is living with his daughter, Bertha Inwards and her family and he states that he is 77 years old and married but Delette is not listed on the census.
Holston, Emerson (I121)

90 (Research):The proof that this is the Nancy Holston who is the wife of John Holston that is quoted in Bert's letter is the Hardin Co., KY Will of Thomas Bailey which lists all of his children. Nancy is listed as "Nancy Holson" the last name missing the "t". However, spelling errors were common in recording deeds, wills, etc. in the 1800's and Holson is common variant of Holston. A lookup of the same time period in Hardin Co., did not reveal any "Holsons" living there and the names of the other children are the same, so one can conclude that this is indeed the Nancy Bailey who married John Holston of Elizabethtown, KY. Bailey, Nancy (I107)

91 (Research):The Texas Death Index show a "Freiley, S. B. Jr." in Rains County, Texas where Squire used to live. I am sure this is him, but must confirm with another source. The 1930 U.S. Census lists him as "Freiley, S. B." so it is entirely possible that the death index described here is Squire Boone. Freiley, Squire B. (I1763)

92 (Research):The will of her father, Thomas Bailey shows her as Edney Holson (Holston). Therefore, she must have married a Holston from Hardin Co., KY. But which one? For now, she is shown as the wife of Robert Holston based on the following facts:

Her father's will shows that all 3 girls married men by the name of Holson (Holston).
A marriage record exists showing that John Holston married Nancy Bailey in 1811.
A marriage record exists showing that William Holston married Merincy Baily in 1810 and that Thomas Bailey was the bondsman for the marriage.
Robert was in Lebanon, KY in 1820 and in Hardin County, KY in 1830 at the same time as Thomas and William. John by this date had moved to Edgar County, IL.
Bailey, Edna (I282)

93 (Research):The will of her father, Thomas Bailey shows her listed as Merina Holson (Holston). Therefore, she must have married a Holston from Hardin Co., KY. But which one? Bailey, Merina (I278)

94 (Research):There are two records in ancestry.com family trees that show an Irene Holston who married a Leonard Melvin Cowley in Larimer, Colorado on 13 August 1922 and who died in Dallas Texas on 8 July 1976. (Kritzwilliam) and (jschmidt18) - neither has any sources to verify this information. Leonard Crowley will continue to be shown as her husband for research purposes. Holston, Irene Leona (I1129)

95 (Research):There is a California death record for a Theresa Craelius who died 25 February 1907. We know that her daughter, Anna was born 17 February 1907 and that David remarried within a year after her death to Hildegard Janson. Although no marriage record has yet been found there is strong circumstantial evidence that Theresa was David's first wife. It is also likely that Theresa died of complications associated with child birth. Anderson, Theresa (I989)

96 (Research):There is a Cynthia Holston living with Hortenice Andrews and family in 1880. She is listed as his sister-in-law and states she is married. The census was taken in Concordio about 20 miles away from Shirley, KS where she and Chauncey were living in 1870. She is listed as married, but I wonder if Chauncey has died by this date and that she is really a widow living with her brother-in-law. Or she could be there just helping him out because it doesn't appear that he is married even though it states that on the census. She states that both of her parents were born in New York. Cynthia (I732)

97 (Research):There is a George William Holston who was born 24 Nov 1872 to a mother Ogden in Iowa. He died 13 Jun 1951 in San Mateo. Social Security #: (none). Bert states that the family didn't leave Iowa until 1883 and "Billy" was born abt. 1873. Holston, George William (I30)

98 (Research):There is a Harden Holston, age 36 in the 1850 Census of Hurricane, Cumberland, Illinois with his wife, 25, children John, 9, Jane, 7, Manday, 5, James, 3, and Mary, 2. Harden was born in Kentucky and Nancy in Indiana and all the children in Illinois. This is strong evidence that it is the family of Hardin Holston given his age, the birth place, the name of his wife, and the children's names. Holston, Hardin (I109)

99 (Research):There is a record of Saverio Leonetti born to Giuseppe Leonetti and Maria Rosa Cortese and their names are entered here as the parents of Saverio simply for research purposes. We know that Antonio Leonetti's middle name was Giuseppe so he could have been named for his grandfather, but further evidence is needed to prove that Giuseppe and Rosa are the parents of Saverio and the grandparents of Antonio. The birth years match but that doesn't prove much in a small Italian village where every other person is named Antonio or Saverio. Their birth years are calculated from their ages when Saverio was born. The actual microfilms might yield more information. Leonetti, Giuseppe (I1036)

100 (Research):There is a Sterling C. Holston, age 28 listed in the 1930 U.S. Census of Minneapolis, Minnesota who is married to a Majorie F., age 35. He states that he was born in Nebraska and his father in Iowa. But the one fact that doesn't fit is that he says his mother was born in Iowa as well when know for certain that she was born in Missouri. This is our Sterling Holston, despite the error in his mother's birthplace.

Sterling was living in Indianapolis, IN in 1931 when father died. In 1947 at time of his mother's death he was in Omaha, NE
