  • Notes
    • According to Billy's letter he lived in Nebraska and had several children, including Arthur and Grant.

At the time of 1900 Federal Census in Nebraska it shows that Abram and Elizabeth had their granddaughter living with them. "Mayde V.gran dau Mar 1887 13 NE Iowa Ill". The census also indicated that Abram and Elizabeth had 7 children, 5 of whom were living at the time of the census.neb

      Obtained from Trenton, Nebraska Museum:

Abram Holston was a farmer and cattle feeder, while Waller Holston was a farmer and a carpenter. The families prospered, but the sons came of age and wanted farms of their own. Land was expensive and they looked to the homestead frontier of Nebraska and Kansas. In December of 1885, Waller travelled west and selected land in Ridnour Precinct, Hitchcock, Cty. Nebraska. He returned to Iowa and announced his decision. Grandma Holston replied that if one went, they all went. Land was hurriedly put up for sale and auctions were held early in 1886 leaving one day after Grant married his first wife. The Abram Holston women came a short time later.

Waller and his family moved into a dugout on his land, while Abram and his family rented Thomas Curran's house, the now falling down little house north of the highway, just east of Trenton Dam while their own two story house was being built (now owned by Clarence Taul) Waller's home was what is now known as the "Mrs. Hidy Farm" north of Trenton and was originally known as the Holston School, the land donated by Charles Holston.

Abram's obituary in the Trenton News

Abram Holston was born in Hardin Co. Kentucky January 11, 1825, died at his home northwest of town, October 26, 1912, aged 87 years, nine months, and 15 days. With his parents he moved from Kentucky to Illinois and from there to South Bend, Indiana where he was married to Miss Elizabeth Mead, December 31, 1849. To this union seven children were born, five of whom have preceded him to the other world. In 1887 he, with his family moved to Hitchcock Co. locating a claim northwest of Trenton, where he lived until his death. He leaves a wife, two children, J. G. Holston of Trenton and Mrs. Charles O'Beirn of Gravity, Iowa, eighteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were conducted at the home, Monday, October 28th by the Rev. G.T. Noyce, of Crete and the remains were gently laid to rest in the Trenton Cemetery.
    • (Research):The 1900 Federal Census of Hitchcock County, Nebraska shows that he was born in Kentucky, his father in Maryland, and his mother in Virginia. If Abram is correct about his father, John Holston being born in Maryland and then Bert who stated that he was born in Delaware is incorrect.
