  I am changing the year of birth from 1910 which my mother always used to 1909. On any official document she always stated her birthday as December 18, 1910. All census completed from 1910 to 1930 indicate that she was born in 1909. No birth certificate has ever been found and the Rhea County Court House in Dayton has no record of her birth. I remember Mom telling me that she was born prematurely and was so small at birth that her head could fit in a teacup. She also contracted whooping cough as an infant and almost died. She went to school in Dayton and was 15 years old at the time of the famous Scopes trial. This was the trial that started the debate about whether it was permissable to teach Darwin's theory of evolution. As she was growing up her best friend was Mary Jordan and her family lived on the adjacent farm. She and her family show up on the 1920 and 1930 censuses as living next to the Stanleys. She left Dayton as a young woman, sometime between May, 1929 and November 1930 (based on old letters written by her roommate in Chattanooga and her mother in Dayton) and moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania She found work there as a telephone operator. She was on duty the night of the great Johnstown flood and worked round the clock helping people on the phone. She was written up in the local telephone company newspaper for her efforts during this great disaster. Apparently she met Dad during this time and they were married on November 30, 1935. Based on a birth year of 1909 she was 25 years and 11 months old at the time and he was 40 years and one month old. (Research):Joe Bottomlee in a lookup found a birth record for a Ruth Stanley born 23 Jan 1910; father Jno (John) Stanley who was born in Rhea Co. TN and was a farmer; Mother: Mary Stanley, also born in Rhea Co. TN; Doctor: Dr. Thomison. I'm sure these are my grandparents and my mother, Hazel Rebecca Stanley was born in 1910. But her birthday is 18 Dec 1910, not 23 Jan 1910. I wonder if Ruth Stanley was a child who died as an infant and then 11 months later, Hazel was born.
