  • Notes
    • Nancy was still alive in April, 1854 since she was involved in a law suit contesting the will of her father. By 1860 neither Nancy nor Jonathan appear on either the Rhea or Meigs counties census. The 3 girls have all married and thus their last names have changed and Elkanah has died which leaves only John L. as the only Stanley (Stanly) surname in Rhea or Meigs counties.
    • Research

In a 1850 Census taken on 15 September 1850, her age is listed as 50 which would suggest a birth year of 1800. However, the 1830 Census shows only 3 females, 2 of whom are under 5 years old, and the third is between 15 and 20. If the older female is Nancy, she would have been born between 1810 -1815. She might be Jonathan's second wife or the census taker in 1830 checked the wrong column. The adjacent column is 20 and under 30. Since there were already 4 children in the family, it is unlikely, but not impossible that she was between 15 and 20 at the time of the census.

Nancy clearly is related to this family because she is shown as the head of household in 1850 with John L., Lucinda, and Alkana (Elkanah) at home. She also gives her place of birth as Virginia in this same census. So, by this date Jonathan has died or he has left the family.

There is an interesting record (http://juliemorrison.com/gen/rickles/rr01/rr01_074.htm#P175) about a Jonathan Stanley in Franklin County, Virginia which states: "On 22 Dec 1819 Jonathan Stanley married Nancy MARTIN, in Franklin Co., Va." Source: "Marshall Wingfield, Marriage Bonds of Franklin County Virginia 1786-1858, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., page 215, Booker Mullins". Surety given to the marriage by Jeremiah Bowles.

However a poll tax list shows him for the first time in 1819. He would have had to been 16 to be counted as a tithable in that year so his actual birth year would have been 1802-3. This would mean that he was 16 or 17 when he married.

If this is the Nancy and Jonathan I am looking for, here are the possible events and dates for Jonathan Stanley and Nancy Martin and what we know about my Jonathan Stanley and his wife Nancy:

      Year Event
1800 Nancy Martin - Birth (estimated from 1850 census when my Nancy was 50)
1802 Jonathan - Birth (estimated from first appearance on VA poll tax list)
1819 Marriage - Franklin County, VA (16 or 17 - young for a boy to marry?)
1819 Jonathan - First seen on Franklin County, Virginia tax lists
1820 Jonathan - Franklin County, Virginia tax lists
1821 Jonathan - Franklin County, Virginia tax lists
1822 Elkanah - Birth (Estimate. This would make him 7 or 8 at the time of the 1830 Census)
1825 Jonathan - First land grant - March 26, 1825 in the Hiwassee District of Rhea Co.
1826 Jonathan - Second land grant - May 16, 1826 in the Hiwassee District of Rhea Co.
1828 John L. - Birth (calculated birth year)
      1830 Jonathan - Census - Rhea County, TN (would have been 27 - listed as btw 20 - 30)
1840 Nancy - Census - Meigs County as head of household (Jonathan dead before this year or he left the family?)
1850 Nancy - Census - Meigs County - listed as head of household on 19 Sep 1850
1860 Nancy - Census - Meigs County - Nancy no longer appears in either Meigs or Rhea census.

This leaves a gap from about 1822 until 1825 when my Jonathan Stanley receives his first land grant in Rhea County. There is some evidence that the Martins and the Howsers lived briefly in Kentucky after leaving Franklin Co., VA.

The two females under 5 and the time of the 1830 Census would have been born between 1825 and 1830. A third girl was born after 1830.

The 1840 census shows 2 males (1 who is 10 - 15 years old which is John L.) and (1 who is 15 - 20 years old which is Elkanah). However, it shows 5 females in addition to Nancy and I know of only 3 female children. However, the other 2 females could have been hired help or just living with Nancy.
