  • Notes
    • In 1850 Census his named is spelled Alkana.

From John Paul Stanley: "Upon the settlement of Johnathan Stanleys estate and the transfer of real estate title to John L Stanley and Nancy Stanley from Elkanah, Lucinda, Susannah and Mary Jane dated September, 26 1851 the estate had grown to 320 acres. In this document one of the deceased sons and brother to John L Stanley was Elkanah Stanley. Elkanah was called Cain by my Grandad John B Stanley who relayed to me as a young boy that his uncle Cain fought in the mexican war and that once his term expired on his return overland back to Tennessee it was necessary to kill crow to substain him in his journey. John Emmett Stanley informed me that the very family records and documents which I now possess are bond in a portion of the saddle bag Cain used in the Mexican War."

Indeed, in this bag there is a document from the pension office dated 2/6/1849 to Mr Cain Stanley . Decatur , Tenn; SIr , You are herby notified that your claim under the 9th section of the act of February 11, 1847, allowing country land or scrip,at the option of the claimant, has been allowed, and the commissioner of the general Land office has been duly notified therof. We will give you futher information on the subject in due time. I am, respectfully your obedient servant, J. L. EDWARDS commissioner of pensions. # 45575.

My note: The Mexican War was fought from 1846 - 1848 and Elkanah received a land grant dated February 6, 1849. He is also shown on the 1850 census as Alkanah, age 29. He undoubtedly died between 1850 and 1851 when the real estate transfer document stated that he was deceased. This would mean that he and his father died about the same time.
